A question that many may be curious about...Can you hunt with match bullets? A video exploring just that can be found here, specifically with the 6.5 Creedmoor
Theres even a part 2!
While they leave a few questions unturned, these videos really explore the possibility of hunting with a match bullet. One thing that should strongly be emphasized is the thin jacket on a match bullet. While ballistic gel results were comparable and weight retention was surprisingly close to a hunting round, contact with bone is a completely different story.
Should a match bullet hit bone, will it stop, or will it continue to penetrate? There are stories of both instances. Ultimately, there are multiple factors that need to be taken into consideration. What animal is it? how thick is the bone? how fast is the bullet? and many others As the 1st video points out, a black bear was taken with match bullets, so with the right shot placement, it can be very effect.
It is interesting to note, the match bullet behaves quite similarly to the hunting rounds all the way out to what is essentially a 400 yard shot, with comparable mushrooming, weight retention, and wound cavity. With further searching on the web. One can find there are many hunters who successfully hunt with match bullets.
A main take away from videos like this is to know your rifle, know your bullet, know its capabilities. Just NEVER FORGET that shot placement is the most important factor you can account for in a successful hunt.
